When you are looking for a skin care specialist, you want someone you’re going to feel comfortable with. But you also need someone who knows what they’re talking about – and is not out just to give you a relaxing facial and maybe sell you some products. We all have different skin types, and you want someone who knows which treatment will offer the best response for your skin condition. Skin also reacts differently to aging, and should be treated based on how your skin adjusts to age. For some, the aging process may mean more fine lines and wrinkles. For others it may mean an increase in pigmentation or a loss of elasticity. There are treatments for all of these conditions.
As I try to decide which treatment is right for you, I first want to know your skin goals: Are you looking for clearer skin? Do you have pigmentation you’d like to lighten? Are you looking for anti-aging remedies? Help with firming and tightening? Would you like to limit the effects of rosacea? The treatment I recommend to you will depend on both your goals and how your skin reacts. Here are some examples:
- If your goal is to bring back a youthful glow to your skin: Microdermabrasion buffs away layers of dead skin and is the fastest way to get a healthy, youthful glow. It utilizes a stream of micro-crystals projected onto the skin, which are then gently vacuumed away. You may see some redness in your cheeks for a short time after, so this is a treatment you should not schedule on the day of a big event.
- If you’re looking to clear up fine wrinkles, age spots or acne scars: Peels leave your skin brighter, firmer and glowing. They treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and can reduce the appearance of mild scars and acne. These are generally recommended for people with a lighter skin tone, but they can also work on those with a darker skin tone. I can help evaluate if a peel is the right treatment for you.
- If you’d like to prevent breakouts: Facials and scrubs will give you a deep-pore cleanse, meant to calm and cleanse your skin. Some facials may also be followed by a smoothing exfoliation. You can add enhancements to all facials based on your needs. These include: retinol, excellent for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles; hyaluronic acid, a powerful liquid which holds 1,000 times its weight in water and will bind your skin with moisture; and a collagen eye treatment, which infuses skin with collagen to banish puffiness and rejuvenate tired eyes. Depending on your skin conditions, you may want to consider scheduling facials every few weeks, to keep your pores clear and replenish your skin.
